The 2022 Lacryma Christi Rosso is a blend of 90% Piedirosso and 10% Aglianico, sourced from two organically farmed vineyards on the southern slopes of Mount Vesuvius. One, planted in 1995, enjoys a warm southwestern exposure, while the other combines mature vines from the 1950s with younger plantings rooted in soils created by the volcano's 1906 eruption. The fruit is harvested in multiple passes beginning in mid-September, spontaneously fermented, then aged entirely in steel. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after three rackings, the wine rests for an additional year before release, allowing its vibrant personality to settle into remarkable harmony. Aromas of sour cherry, pomegranate, wild strawberry, and red plum are laced with cracked pepper, dried herbs, and an unmistakable thread of smoke and crushed volcanic stone. The palate is bright and nimble, delivering all the savory complexity of Campanian reds without the weight often associated with Aglianico. Soft but present tannins and lively acidity frame the juicy red fruit, while notes of iron, ash, and flint build through the long, mineral finish. Wild, honest, and wonderfully food-friendly, it captures both the vitality of Piedirosso and the unmistakable imprint of Mount Vesuvius in every glass.
