John Woodhouse Audubon’s Dycoteles torquatus, Collared Peccary. Male. (1845–1848) is a refined example of mid-19th-century naturalism, where art and science intertwined to document the living world with clarity and grace. A member of the famed Audubon family of wildlife artists, John Woodhouse portrayed the collared peccary in profile with evident care for anatomy and texture, situating the animal within an understated landscape that hints at its native habitat. The result is both a faithful record and an artwork of quiet, enduring elegance.
This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of the original Victorian zoological illustration, produced with archival pigment inks on either acid-free, heavyweight art paper or on artist’s cotton canvas. Choose from a range of sizes to suit your space, with optional framing and matting to arrive display-ready. The Unique Maps Co. can personalize your piece with a printed title plate, dedication, or date, and we’re happy to customize sizing and border treatments to complement your interior.
John Woodhouse Audubon (1812–1862), son and collaborator of John James Audubon, dedicated his career to depicting North America’s mammals with the same observational rigor that made his family name synonymous with natural history art. His field-informed drawings and measured compositions helped elevate zoological illustration beyond mere record-keeping, offering viewers a nuanced sense of presence and character in each species.
The subject here, identified as Dycoteles torquatus—the collared peccary—was of particular interest to 19th-century naturalists charting the fauna of the Americas. Shown in a poised stride, the peccary’s compact, muscular frame, coarse bristles, and distinctive pale “collar” are described with precision. Works like this served an educational purpose at a time when illustrated plates were indispensable to taxonomy, yet they were also prized as tasteful additions to parlors, libraries, and studies.
Visually, the print harmonizes earthy browns and warm, sunstruck tones—orange and yellow accents in the ground and sky lend a gentle glow that sets off the animal’s gray-brown coat. Fine, layered strokes differentiate soft underfur from bristling guard hairs, while subtle gradients in the background create depth without distracting from the profile silhouette. It’s an artwork that balances scientific clarity with painterly sensitivity—ideal for collectors who appreciate both natural history and classic design.
A timeless choice for a study, den, reading nook, or nature-inspired living space, this print makes a thoughtful gift for wildlife enthusiasts, naturalists, and travelers—especially those with fond memories of the American Southwest and beyond. It’s a distinguished pick for Christmas, birthdays, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or a housewarming present that brings warm color and quiet intelligence to any wall.
